Overview

Shake and Reset is a way to help your body release built-up tension. Instead of just trying to think your way out of stress, this method uses your body's natural ability to shake off pressure. It is a safe and active way to help your nervous system find a sense of calm after a long day or a stressful moment.

How Your Brain Works

Your brain uses two main parts to manage your feelings and your ability to think clearly.

Amygdala

The Guard Dog

The alarm system. Reacts to stress with fight-or-flight responses.

Prefrontal Cortex

The Wise Owl

Logic and calm decision-making, best accessed when the alarm quiets down.

The Guard Dog on Duty

When you are stressed, your Guard Dog (the amygdala) starts barking to keep you safe. It triggers a response that floods your body with energy and makes your muscles tight. This is a natural behaviour, but it makes it hard to think because the Guard Dog is taking up all the space.

The Wise Owl Goes Quiet

Your Wise Owl (the prefrontal cortex) handles logic and stays calm. When the Guard Dog is barking, the Wise Owl often disappears. You cannot talk the Dog into being quiet using logic because the threat response happens in the body first. This is why you might feel frozen or unable to find your words when stressed.

The Body Reset Shift

Shaking is a bottom-up approach. Instead of using logic, you use your body to send a safety signal. Gentle shaking helps discharge the extra tension the Guard Dog created. This tells your system the danger has passed, allowing the Wise Owl to return to the centre and take charge again.

How to Use This Skill

This skill is like giving your Guard Dog a job to do so it stops barking and lets the Wise Owl return to the centre of your mind.

1

Shake Out Your Arms and Legs for 15 Seconds

Give your arms and legs a good wiggle for 15 seconds. It might feel a bit silly, but it tells your body to let go of physical tightness.

2

Take Three Long Exhales

Breathe in normally, then let out a long, slow sigh. Do this three times to help the Guard Dog stand down.

3

Start Your Task

Pick up your pen or open your book. Notice how it feels easier to concentrate now that your body is calm.

Real-Life Example

Beating the Test Day Jitters

The Big Exam

You sit down for a math test and suddenly your heart starts racing and your hands feel cold.

The Guard Dog Warning

I am going to fail this and everyone will think I am not smart enough.

The Reset Process

  1. Shake it off: Before the teacher starts, wiggle your hands and feet under your desk for 15 seconds to release that nervous energy.
  2. Sigh it out: Take three very long breaths out to tell your brain you are safe.
  3. Refocus: Pick up your pencil and read the first question now that your mind feels clearer.

By calming the Guard Dog, the student allowed their Wise Owl to access the math formulas they studied, helping them focus on the page.

Practice Tips

Making this a regular habit can help you stay balanced even when things get tough.

  • Be Gentle

You do not need to shake hard to make it work. Just follow what feels natural for your body's movement.

  • Stay Comfortable

Only do what feels okay for you. If you feel overwhelmed, take a break and try a smaller wiggle.
