Plant the Seeds of Survival
North America's pollinator populations are collapsing. Habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change have stripped away the bees, butterflies, and insects that keep our food systems alive. The Bloom Kit is a student-led call to action to reverse that decline. Created by youth environmental leaders, it transforms any backyard, balcony, or schoolyard into a thriving pollinator refuge and helps rebuild the biodiversity our planet depends on.
How your Bloom Kit works
-
1. Prep Your Patch
Choose a sunny spot in your yard, a community garden, or even a large balcony pot. Clear a small area and gently rake the soil.
-
2. Sow Your Seeds
Scatter your region-specific seed packet into the soil. Give them their first watering and let nature take its course.
-
3. Track Your Impact
Keep the soil moist until the seedlings are established. Scan the QR code to place a pin on our live Bloom Map!
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Bloom Kit?
The Bloom Kit is a native pollinator habitat starter pack created by students at Metro Prep. Each kit contains wildflower seeds selected specifically for your region, plus everything you need to plant a patch that supports bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
Who is the Bloom Kit for?
This kit is for everyone who wants to help pollinators, from beginner to experienced gardeners. It's an excellent project for families planting at home, for schools and classrooms, and for community groups. Whether you have an urban balcony or a backyard, the Bloom Kit is an easy way to get started.
What pollinators will this help?
The Bloom Kit supports a wide range of local pollinators, including native bees, monarchs and other butterflies, moths, and beetles. In some regions, the native wildflowers will also attract hummingbirds.
How much space do I need to plant this kit?
ou don't need a huge yard! The seeds in one kit are enough to create a dense, beautiful patch of about 10-15 square feet (roughly 3x4 feet). You can also plant them in a large balcony container or several smaller pots. Any patch, big or small, makes a difference!
Are the seeds safe for pets?
The wildflower species are selected to be non-toxic to common pets like cats and dogs and, of course, to the pollinators you want to attract. However, we always recommend monitoring pets around any new plants in your garden.
Are these seeds GMO or treated with neonicotinoids?
Absolutely not. All our seeds are non-GMO, open-pollinated, and are never treated with neonicotinoids or other systemic pesticides that are harmful to pollinators.
What happens if my seeds don't grow?
Nature can be unpredictable! The most common reasons for poor germination are not enough sun, too much or too little water, or competition from weeds. Ensure your patch gets at least 6 hours of direct sun daily and keep the soil consistently moist (but not soggy) for the first 4-6 weeks. If you've followed the steps and still see no growth after the germination period noted in your guide, please contact us.
Are the seeds really native to my area?
Yes! Each kit is tailored by region to include only native wildflower species – the plants that evolved alongside your local pollinators. These species are selected with expert partners to ensure ecological relevance and environmental benefit.
Why are pollinators in trouble?
Pollinators are disappearing due to several interconnected factors, including habitat loss from urbanization, widespread pesticide use, climate change, and the spread of invasive plant species. This is a serious issue because many plants, including our food crops, rely on them to reproduce. Their decline threatens global biodiversity and food systems.
How does the Bloom Kit help?
By planting native wildflowers, you restore essential habitat while providing food and shelter for pollinators. Each kit creates a "stepping-stone" that helps connect fragmented habitats, strengthening the local ecological corridor. When you plant a kit, you join a network of students and citizens working together to rebuild ecosystems.
Can I send a kit as a gift?
Absolutely! Just enter the recipient’s address at checkout. The packaging is designed to be gift-ready and includes an optional message.
Do you offer bulk orders for schools or events?
Yes – we offer discounted bulk kits for schools, libraries, and community groups. Email bloom@metroprep.com with your request.
